FIRST GRADE CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

FIRST NINE WEEKS

 

The first nine weeks grading period of First Grade is a transitional period for your child.

In order to give your child time to make the transition from a kindergarten setting to the routine and work load of First Grade, no grades will be given until the fourth week of school.

After that, the grading system will be as follows:

Math, English, Reading, Spelling, Science, Social Studies:

A

93-100

Excellent

B

85-92

Good

C

75-84

Average

D

70-74

Poor

F

Below 70

Failing

 

Conduct & Handwriting:
E - Excellent
G - Good
S - Satisfactory
N - Needs Improvement
U - Unsatisfactory

 

 

Some of the skills and topics we will cover include:

-Identifying color words, rhyming words and pictures

-Identifying numbers and number words

-Reviewing basic sight words

-Identifying initial and final consonant sounds

-Arranging pictures in sequential order

-Identifying and reproducing shapes and patterns

-Demonstrating beginning of school safety procedures

-Learning ways people are alike and different

-Five senses, living things, fire safety

-Character Education: Respect and Responsibility

-All about me, Johnny Appleseed, Columbus, Goods and Services

 

Multicultural:
Compare families with those in other cultures.

 

Computer:
Learning basic skills of finding an application and using the keyboard or mouse to work through an application.

-Blends   -Long vowel a   -Emphasis on oral reading with comprehension and decoding skills

Spell words with consonant blends and short vowels

-Recognize parts of sentences

-Recognize nouns

-Write complete sentences with correct punctuation

-Write legibly with correct spacing and letter formation
